Frequently Asked Question
What Is A
"Ministry Degree"
Re-Asserting the Authority of the Church
in the Area of Christian Education
For the first 1500 years in the life of the New Testament Church the primary responsibility for Christian Education rested in the hands of the church.
Consequently, the majority of education in Western civilization was the result of the work of the church. From the Middle Ages through the Renaissance the church served as the forerunner of meaningful education.
In matter of fact, well before the oldest colleges and universities became secular institutions they all began as "Cathedral Schools" including Oxford, University of Bologna and the University of Paris.
In pretty much the same fashion, America's oldest educational institutions, Harvard, Yale and Princeton, began as church sponsored institutions dedicated to preparing individuals for the ministry.
With the secularization of education, starting in the 19th century, the church surrrendered its role as the chief educator of society and yielded to secular schools with a more widespread discipline offerings i.e medicine, law, engineeering etc.
Ministry degrees are an effort of the church to re-assert its authority of determining what is authentic and comprehensive when it comes to the field of Christianity.
A "Ministry Degree" is not intended to replace a secular degree and its credits are non-transferable. Its sole purpose is to prepare people for ministry and seeks to be recognized only in a Christian setting.
